You can help 2 ways: Attend our rally on Aug 21, 2009 Guildford Mall and then walk to Fraser Health's office @ 10:45 A.M.
AND
Write to the politicians listed below and voice your concerns.
What does that mean to you?
The seniors in your family and in the community will lose:
- Outreach workers who are the ‘life line’ to programs and benefits for isolated seniors;
- Congregate meals offered at 7 different sites providing inexpensive nutrition and social interaction;
- Information and referral to mitigate disabilities and navigate through government bureaucracy;
- Caregiver support, without which both the caregivers and those cared for become at risk; and
- Volunteers, presently numbering 140, who provide vital social interaction and links to the community.
All of this help will be gone.
Help us continue and fulfill our mission! WE HELP SENIORS

Senior care beds an Election Hotspot - CTV News
|
April 21st, 2009 |
The B.C. Liberals and the NDP are continuing their spat over NDP claims the provincial government broke its 2001 election promise to build 5,000 long-term care beds for seniors.
"His government, Gordon Campbell's government, turned their back on seniors in B.C., it completely failed to keep its promises," NDP Leader Carole James said.
James says Health Minister George Abbott continued to mislead British Columbians until recently when he admitted to providing only 800 beds for seniors.
The Liberals say they actually surpassed their promise to provide more beds for seniors when assisted living and supportive housing beds are included.
"That is a blatant falsehood," Liberal candidate Colin Hansen said. "In the first four years, we did not accomplish the net increase of 5,000 beds but we have subsequently met and exceeded it."
But the B.C. Medical Association supports the NDP's position, saying in a report last year that the Liberals have failed to live up to their promise to seniors.

SFU Study Pays Seniors $150 for Participation
|
March 6th, 2009 |
Simon Fraser University is looking for seniors familiar with the South Surrey area for a study it's conducting called Study on Neighbourhoods and Physical Activity of Older Adults.
The purpose of the study - which is being done by the university's Gereontology Research Centre - is to explore how neighbourhood characteristics influence older adults' physical activity.
Participants will be required to attend a half-day training session (early April 2009), take photographs of their neighbourhood (disposable camera provided) and attend a group discussion in May to share their photographs and talk about recommendations on how to overcome barriers and enhance facilitators of physical activity for seniors in their community.
At the end of the discussion session, participants will receive a $150 stipend to help cover their time and travel expenses.
Participants must be 65 or older; live in or be familiar with the South Surrey community; live in community-based housing; be able to communicate and understand basic English; be functionally mobile and comfortable walking around their neighbourhood and be able to self-report physical and social activity.
Participants must also attend the training and discussion sessions at SFU Vancouver's Harbour Centre campus.
Assistance will be extended to arrange transportation to and from Harbour Centre, if requested.
For more information, contact research assistant Mike Campo at 778-782-8681 or email pastudy@sfu.ca. |
